July brings the hottest stretch of the Southern California year, and your air conditioner feels every degree of it. When the AC runs hard, your energy bill climbs right along with the thermometer. The good news is that a few simple habits can keep your home comfortable and hold your costs down at the same time. Here is where to start.

Block the heat before it gets inside

A surprising amount of summer heat comes straight through your windows. Close blinds, shades, or curtains on the south and west sides of your home during the hottest afternoon hours, roughly noon to six. Keeping that radiant heat out means your AC has far less work to do, and you will feel the difference by evening.

Give your AC less to fight

Swap your HVAC filter. A clogged filter forces the system to strain, which wastes energy and shortens its life. A fresh one every one to three months keeps air moving efficiently. While you are at it, run ceiling fans counterclockwise to push cool air down, and seal obvious gaps around doors and windows so the cool air you paid for stays inside.

Let a smart thermostat do the thinking

A smart or programmable thermostat is one of the easiest upgrades to make. Set it to ease off the cooling while you are at work or asleep, then cool back down before you get home. Many models learn your schedule and adjust on their own, so you save money without ever feeling less comfortable.
