July heats up in the San Gabriel Valley, and the warm evenings are made for getting outside. Here are some free and family-friendly July highlights worth putting on the calendar.

Summer in San Gabriel at Mission Playhouse Plaza

The city’s free outdoor concert series returns to Mission Playhouse Plaza. Catch Woodie & the Longboards, a Beach Boys tribute, on July 9 at 7:00 p.m., and The Swedes, an ABBA tribute, on July 23 at 7:00 p.m. Chairs are offered first come, first served, and you are welcome to bring a blanket or your own seat.

Silent Sundays on the Mighty Wurlitzer

On July 26 at 2:30 p.m., the Mission Playhouse presents “The Thief of Bagdad” with live accompaniment on its 1924 Mighty Wurlitzer organ. It is a one-of-a-kind way to experience a silent film classic, and a lovely escape from the afternoon heat.

Pasadena POPS at the LA Arboretum

The Pasadena POPS summer season continues at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia. Spread a blanket, pack a picnic, and enjoy “Dancing in the Street: Music of Motown” on July 11 or “A Toast to the Rat Pack” on July 25. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking, with music at 7:30 p.m.

Looking ahead: 626 Night Market

The valley’s signature night market returns to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia for its summer run August 14 to 16. Hundreds of food vendors, artisan booths, and live entertainment fill the grounds. Go hungry, arrive early, and bring cash for the stalls.
